This is a list of the books that I have read that may be useful for cancer sufferers and their carers:

Title Author Comments
dutch_courage

Dutch Courage

Dirk van Zuylen

The story of a Dutch Christian youth worker, working in the UK who was diagnosed with kidney failure. Not about cancer, but a very moving book about suffering from a Christian perspective. A recommended read for anyone who is suffering, or their carers.
its_not_about_the_bike

Lance’s inspirational book is well known. Diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer, Lance overcome his cancer and then went on to win the Tour de France!

This is the book of the Bristol Cancer Help Centre. It is quite old now, but is still the standard text about using nutrition to fight cancer.
anti_cancer Anticancer, a new way of life
Dr David Servan-Schreiber
An excellent book and a must read for anyone diagnosed with any cancer. Well written and informative. Includes sections on the relationship between the mind and body.

livestrong

Livestrong

Lance Armstrong Foundation

A series of testimonials from cancer sufferers collated by Lance Armstrong’s foundation
joni The Joni Story

Joni Eareckson Tada

The story of Joni Tada who became a paraplegic following a diving accident. Her story is told very much from a Christian point of view and this book is an excellent read for any Christians who are struggling with a diagnosis of cancer, or other serious illness.
Spontaneous_healing

Spontaneous healing

Andrew Weil

Excellent. A super book about how to support your body’s healing processes. Covers diet, as well as reducing the effects of toxins and the role of the mind in the healing process. Highly recommended.
lessons

Lessons for the Living

Stan Goldberg

Stunning book – a must read. Honest and moving accounts of Stan Goldberg (a prostate cancer sufferer) work with hospice patients.
human_side_of_cancer The Human Side of Cancer

Jimmie C. Holland and Sheldon Lewis

An excellent book which deals exclusively with the emotional side of cancer. Highly recommended (might currently be out of print).
john_diamond C

John Diamond

John Diamond is well known for his very honest account of his cancer. Worth reading.
living_beyond_limits Living beyond limits

David Spiegel Md

Excellent book – lots of good advice on facing up the diagnosis of cancer.
living_with_cancer Living with Cancer

Dr. Jeffrey Tobias and Kay Eaton

This is quite an old book (probably out of print) which I didn’t find helpful at all. It is quite dismissive of alternative therapies.

no_death_no_fear no death – no fear

Thich Nhat Hanh

Very accessible book on the Buddhist view of death – a good read.
prostate_cookbook

The Prostate Cookbook

Margaret Rayman, Kay Dilley and Kay Gibbons

Lots of very interesting recipes and advice on food.
the_feeling_of_what_happens The feeling of what happens

Antonio Damasio

This is a highly dense and academic book primarily about consciousness. I found it an absolutely fascinating book, but it is not an easy read!
tibetian_book The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying

Sogyal Rinpoche

Review pending
you_can_heal You can heal your life

Louise L. Hay

This is not about cancer – but Louises’ books are quite well known and she has an interesting view on life and how we can grab hold of life for ourselves. I enjoyed reading parts of this book.
intoxicated Intoxicated by my illness

Anatole Broyard

I didn’t find this book helpful. However, I tried to read it at a time when I was at a really low ebb.
prostate-cancer-plant

Prostate cancer: understand, prevent and overcome prostate cancer

Professor Jane Plant

Didn’t find this a particularly easy read and was largely a very strong argument against milk and dairy products (which I agree with!). Strangely there seemed to be lots on chemotherapy but relatively little on hormone therapy.
you_are_here

you are here

Thich Nhat Hanh

Another excellent book from the Buddhist monk – this time on a subject that for me is the secret of dealing with cancer.
